Golf Report - 16 November 2024

It has been a week like no other at Marysville Golf Club with three events held at the club and three held at other clubs attended by Marysville players.

Details of the very successful major fundraiser and 50th anniversary celebrations were reported last week but the following day the Marysville Men’s/Mixed annual tournament was held.  On a glorious sunny day 71 players played including 24 golfers from Princes Hill GC who had played on the previous day. A golfer from Growling Frog Golf Club won the major trophy but local knowledge did come to the fore with a number of Marysville players winning sections. Steve Berry won A Grade, Steve Coker won B Grade, Lloyd Flaherty won C Grade. The Stow family also were on the winners list with Sabrina runner up in the ladies section and Travers runner up in C Grade. Mim Page and Lloyd Flaherty won a nearest the pin and Julie O’Shea won the longest drive on the 8th hole.

On Monday 11th November 2 teams of Marysville ladies played in the Dalhousie District Jean Wallder Bowl at Yea. 10 teams of 3 competed and the Bowl was won by a ladies team from Seymour. Mim Page won 2 nearest the pins. Players thanked Yea members for their hospitality.

On Thursday 14th November 34 ladies from 13 clubs gathered at Seymour GC to play in their annual tournament. The main trophy was won by a lady from Jubilee GC with Margaret Blair (31) winning C Grade with nett 79. Helen Howard was part of the winning small team and Dalhousie Player of the Year points were awarded to Margaret and Helen. Players thanked the Seymour ladies for their hospitality.

Whilst some ladies were playing at Seymour the Dalhousie Veterans were playing at Marysville. 37 players played with no winners from Marysville but it was great to see so many golfers enjoying the course.

After the Veterans had finished their round, 10 of the regular nine holers played stableford on the back nine holes. The winner was Glen Rattay (6) with 18 points from Keith Atwell (10). Glen’s round included a wind assisted putt on the 14th hole where the ball did a 90 degree turn into the hole. Glen won the nearest the pin on the 11th and Bob Emblin won the nearest the pin on the 18th. Next Thursday players will be playing the front nine holes with a 12.30 arrival for 1.00pm tee off.

On Saturday the first round of the 2024/5 Foodworks Murrundindi Masters was played at Eildon. An excellent field of 89 players played on the stunning course. Husband and wife Susan and Geoff Auriche from Yea were each declared the Eildon Mini Masters both with 41 points. Sabrina Stow (22) continued her good form and won the ladies A Grade with 40 points, Brian Worcester (17) won the men’s B Grade with 39 points and new member Alex Bullard won the nearest the pin on the 14th. Members thank Eildon for hosting the day and Cathie Harper from Foodworks for presenting the very generous trophies to the winners. The next round of the Foodworks Murrindindi Masters is on 11th January at Alexandra.

Next Saturday a stableford round will be played for the Captains Trophy. New Junior members have been invited to play in this event.

It is always a difficult task to thank those involved in organizing and assisting with these golf days in case someone is not named.  However special mention must go to Gail Leigh and her daughter April, and Helen Howard for coordinating the catering for 2 of the above mentioned events. Heather Jenkins, Marilyn Johnson, Ken Whittingham and Steve Coker are thanked for their work behind the scenes as are all those who assisted in some way to make it a week of successful events.
