Golf Report - 15 May 2022

The theme for this National Volunteer Week is ‘Better Together’ and it is certainly the case that the Marysville golf club benefits from all the volunteers working together. The club like so many throughout the country rely heavily on volunteers and this is a week when we need to reflect on the amount of work the volunteers do and thank them for it. The club could simply not operate without the committee of management, the green keeping team and the numerous tasks and responsibilities covered by members past and present. After golf last Saturday President Steve Coker thanked profusely all the members for their contributions to the club and commented on the willingness of members to volunteer for tasks when asked to do so and often at short notice.

On Saturday in challenging weather conditions the ladies played a stroke round for the 4th and final round of their Championships. Congratulations to Gail Leigh for winning the scratch event with a score of 253 over 3 rounds and for the title of the 2022 Marysville Ladies Champion. Jody Doran was the runner up with 261. Gail has been the ladies champion for many years and thoroughly deserves the title once again. The handicap Champion was Heather Jenkins with nett 225 over three rounds followed closely by Gail Leigh with nett 226. Congratulations to Heather who won the event for the first time after a very consistent season.

The lady’s daily winner was Jody Doran (11) with 75 nett and Sabrina Stow (20) was runner up with 77 nett. Jillian Chandler won the putting with 29 putts. Whilst the ladies were playing their championship round the men played stableford. The winner was Paul Martin (30) with 36 points followed by Jim Bissett (19) with 32 points. The nearest the pins were won by Peter Lilley, Alan Howard and Duncan Talbot who also won the Golden Shot. Next Saturday I am sure most golfers will manage to cast their votes around a game of stableford.

On Monday 9 May the ladies pennant team played Strathbogie at Kilmore and Marysville won 3 /2. Our thanks to Helen Howard, Jenny Coleman, Lesley Rundle, Jillian Chandler and Beverley Bellman for representing the club. On Monday 16 May the ladies played Lancefield at Seymour but at the time of writing the results were not available. The men’s five qualifying rounds for pennant have been completed with Marysville hosting the final round today. Congratulations to the Marysville team for reaching the final of the Division 2 Handicap section to be played against Alexandra at Broadford on Sunday May 22nd. Well done to all the men who have represented Marysville during the season.

Last Thursday a number of ladies played in the Euroa Tournament. Congratulations to Jillian Chandler for winning the C Grade scratch event, to Gail Leigh for winning a nearest the pin and to both Gail and Beverley Bellman, who with Vicki Clements from Yea won the small teams event. Jillian also won a Dalhousie Player of the Year point. Well played ladies and the next event they play in is the Yea Bowl on Thursday.

A reminder to members that there will be a working bee at the club on Tuesday 24th May from 9.00am. If members are unable to attend on that day but are able to assist at another time please see Steve Coker who will designate a job to you. Don’t forget things are ‘Better Together’.
